Our Belgian Ladies Abroad

Part 3 - 10 / 12 / 2012

Our Belgian Ladies Abroad
It was THE game of the week and the topper between the leading teams in the Euroleague did not disappoint in terms of excitement and suspense. Unfortunately it did not end well for Ann Wauters’ Galatasaray (photo: galatasaray.org). Ann’s former team Ekaterinburg won on Turkish ground with 71-70 and is now the sole undefeated team in the competition. Although Diana Taurasi had 16 points for the winners, it was Deanna Nolan who was dominating with 20 points with a FG percentage of 75%. Lindsay Whalen and Sancho Lyttle tried their best for Galatasaray, but their 22 points and 8 rebounds (6 assists), respectively 11 points and 8 rebounds proved not to be enough in the end. It was not Ann’s best night with only 9 points and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. Next up they play tomorrow against Novi Zagreb at home before facing Prague the upcoming week. In the Turkish competition they had a pretty easy victory this weekend. They won by 71-56 against Janel McCarville and Cheryl Ford’s Canik Bld. Ann Wauters contributed 11 points and 4 rebounds. Four other players from Galatasaray scored in double figures: American guard Lindsay Whalen, Spanish center Sancho Lyttle, Turkish guard Isil Alben and American forward Sylvia Fowles. Gala stays on the third position in standings with a 7-1 record.

The outcome for Wisla was more positive in the Euroleague this week. In an extremely tight game the Polish team won 74-73 against the Turkish team Tarsus and continues its winning streak. Anke de Mondt (photo: wislacanpack.pl) won her last three games in the Euroleague and her team is now fourth in Group A with a 3-3 record. Wisla was led by the unstoppable Tina Charles who proved once again her domination with an impressive double-double of 27 points and 16 rebounds. Anke de Mondt also had a good night with 9 points, 5 rebounds in 36 minutes of playing time. For Tarsus, Israelian star Shay Doron stepped up her game with 22 points and 6 rebounds, but in the end it was not enough to claim a victory. In the Polish competition Wisla had the last weekend off.

Also the other Belgian competing in the Euroleague could celebrate a success in last week’s game. Kathy Wambe and Familia Schio won against Angel McCoughtry’s Fenerbahce and are the leading team of group B with a 5-1 record. For Familia Schio Jantel Lavender had a great evening with a 24 points and 12 rebounds double-double. But it was Kathy Wambe who made the difference for her team with 16 points (6/8 FG), 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Alongside Pondexter (12 points) and McCoughtry (17 points), Belorussian star center Anastasiya Verameyenka fought back with 12 points (6/6 FG) and 6 rebounds, but Fenerbahce was outrebounded 34-44 and lost in the end 74-69. Familia Schio won more easily their last game in the Italian A1 with 82-43 against Pozzuoli. Wambe chipped in 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in that game.

Caja Rural Zamarat grabbed an important victory against Gran Canaria. Kim Mestagh showed her great qualities during that game and as a starter added 15 points (5/9 3s), grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Her teammate Taru Tuukkanen, who she will probably compete against this summer with the Belgian cats also added 12 points for the winners. Caja Rural won by 81-60 and stays on fourth position with a 5-4 record. Kim is elected in the best five of the Liga this week

Hanne Mestdagh had to witness another two defeats from her team the Colorado State Rams. Against Colorado and Tulsa they lost by 72-46 and 58-43. Their current record is 3-6.

The two Belgian women coaches abroad Thibault Petit and his assistant coach Pascal Meurs are having a difficult season this year with Arras. They lost once again last weekend against Nantes with 68-57 and are only second to last in standings with a 2-10 record. Also in the Euroleague they are not very successful with 0-6 streak and are still waiting for their first success. The ambitious gamble to play in the Euroleague this season seems not really to pay off so far for the team from Northern France.

Tarbes ended Villeneuve’s and Emma Meesseman’s two game winning streak last weekend. Villeneuve was unable to control Tarbes’ Serbian forward Jovana Rad who scored 28 points. But also Cousseins-Smith (14 points), Smith (11 points) and Salagnac (15 points) were able to score too easily. Villeneuve’s Sanni with 18 points and Williams with 14 points tried to reduce the gap but it was not enough to avoid a 86-72 defeat. Emma added 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 20 minutes. Villeneuve stays on the 12th spot with a 3-9 record.

Harriet (Hatti) Bende’s team Limoges celebrated their first success of the season. They won against the CFBB (Centre Fédéral de Basket in Paris for girls born 1995 and younger) by 63-69. Hatti played for 3 minutes and grabbed one rebound. Limoges is now only second to last with a 1-9 record.

Caroline Bourlioux (Lindenwood University) also lost her two past games. By Northwest Missouri State they were handed a 40-69 and by Pittsburg State a 65-82 defeat. In the first game Caroline had 4 points and 3 rebounds and in the second 9 points and 3 rebounds. Her team has only recorded one victory in nine games so far.
